Frequently asked questions about Venetian Blinds
Venetian blinds, sometimes called horizontal blinds, are sturdy and versatile window coverings with horizontal slats (made from wood, metal or polyresin) that can be tilted to control light and privacy.
Available in multiple variants, colours, sizes, and materials, they are suitable for use in homes and other spaces.
Venetian blinds can be customised with heritage tape and string finish, which are two design options for how the slats of Basswood Venetian blinds are connected and held together. The tape adds a decorative touch with a fabric strip over the cords, while the string offers a clean, minimal look.
Slat sizes also typically come in 25mm or 50mm options. The 25mm offers a more subtle look, while the 50mm creates a bolder, more defined appearance which can be more suited to larger windows.

Venetian blinds come in various materials, types and colours. Each option has unique benefits to suit your style or space. These include:
- Aluminium Venetian blinds, which are lightweight and durable.
- Wooden Venetian blinds, which add warmth and elegance.
- Polyresin Venetian blinds, which are sturdy and low-maintenance.
Nolans offers Aluminium Venetian Blinds, Basswood Venetian Blinds, and Formwood Venetian Blinds.
Available in different sizes, these blinds fit a wide range of windows and room types.

To measure for Venetian blinds, first decide whether you want an inside or outside mount. For an inside mount, measure the width and height of the window recess at three points (top, middle, bottom for width; left, middle, right for height) and use the smallest measurement. For an outside mount, measure the area you want the blinds to cover, adding extra width and height for better coverage.

Installing venetian blinds at home can be simple. First, measure your window to ensure a perfect fit. Then, secure the brackets, attach the headrail, and position the slats.
Some blinds come with an installation guide, making setup quick and hassle-free. Download one of these Luxaflex installation pamphlets, depending on the size of your window and subsequent blind you choose to install:

Basic cleaning methods:
- Dust your Venetian blinds regularly with a dry or slightly damp microfiber cloth.
- You can also use a feather duster or a vacuum with a soft brush attachment.
- A compressed air or hair dryer on a non-heat setting can be used to blow away dust.
- Always close the slats in one direction, dust, then reverse the slats and repeat on the opposite side.
More extensive methods for a deeper clean:
- Wipe down the slats with a damp cloth and mild detergent, but ensure you avoid harsh chemicals.
- Another option could be to remove the blinds from the window completely and soak them in warm water with a mild detergent. Wash them for about 5 minutes by gently moving the water around with your fingers.
- Not recommended for blinds with cotton or decorative tapes.
- For a thorough clean, consider professional ultrasonic cleaning, but avoid this method for wood blinds or any motorised or specialty hardware.
- Injection/extraction is another cleaning method that injects and extracts the cleaning solution in one step. This is a service typically outsourced and performed at home, so there is no need to remove the window treatments.
Please note: Wooden blinds should never be soaked in water or cleaned with detergent, as the wood can be warped or damaged.
Cleaning methods might also vary slightly depending on the blind material:
- Aluminium blinds are moisture-resistant, so they can simply be wiped clean with a damp cloth and mild soap or an over-the-counter blind cleaner.
- Wooden blinds (especially Basswood) should never be soaked or cleaned with a very wet object, and detergents are not recommended as they may damage the finish. Rather, use a dry or barely damp cloth to clean each slat.
- Tip: When cleaning the window behind the blind, spray glass cleaner on a cloth rather than spraying directly on the window. This prevents damage to the wood finish if the cleaner splatters.
- Fabric blinds or fabric-covered slats may require gentle vacuuming or spot-cleaning with fabric-safe products.
- Polyresin blinds are durable and water-resistant, so they are easy to clean with mild soap and water.
Nolans offers Aluminium Venetian Blinds, Basswood Venetian Blinds, and Formwood Venetian Blinds.
If your blinds include heritage tape or a string finish:
- Spot-clean using fabric-safe wipes or cool distilled water.
- Avoid rubbing, and always support the back of the tape with a dry cloth to prevent water stains.
- Tapes with a shiny or lustrous finish (like rayon or acetate) should not be cleaned with water, as it may leave marks.
- Take extra care not to wet the cords or tape as you’re cleaning the main blind slats, as water can stain them or weaken the material over time.
Tip: Clean your blinds monthly to avoid buildup and maintain a fresh, polished look in any room.
